Bio
Name:

Captain (formerly Lieutenant) Bruce Grey

Callsign:

Greyhound

Assignments:

Battlestar Pegasus, under the commands of Admiral Helena Cain, Colonel Jack Fisk, Commander Barry Garner, Commander Lee "Apollo" Adama.

Pegasus CAG- promoted to Pegasus CAG soon after the settlement on New Caprica and kept the title until the destruction of Pegasus.

Battlestar Galactica- currently a member of Galactica's squadron of pilots, under Admiral William Adama.

Background:

Bruce Grey was born on Caprica, the third child of Wallace and Miranda Grey. He was a bit of a family maverick, the rest of them being more scholarly-minded. He'd wanted to be a pilot since he was a little boy and went to flight school after graduating high school.

His first assignment was the Battlestar Pegasus under the command of Admiral Cain. Though taken aback by her at first, Bruce soon realized that she could kick just about anyone's ass and took to military life quickly, making friends and bonding not only with his fellow pilots, but the Pegasus deckhands as well.

Eight years later, he had been promoted twice, to the rank of lieutenant JG and then to full lieutenant. His dogged determination to get his job done earned him the callsign "Greyhound," a play on his last name that he eventually got used to (sort of).

At the time of the Cylon attacks, Greyhound along with his Pegasus crewmates was scheduled for some well-earned downtime. His father, hearing that Bruce planned to visit, told him to wait for him at the Shipyards and the two of them would catch a ride together. Needless to say, the father-son rendezvous didn't happen as planned. Instead, Greyhound was thrust into the same nightmare that every survivor of the Cylon Holocaust faced after the unprovoked attacks on the Twelve Colonies.

On the new Pegasus, Bruce and his shipmates soon learned that if they wanted to survive for very long, they had to shut the frak up and keep their heads down in order to avoid the wrath of Admiral Cain. Morale was low, but determination was higher than it had ever been.

Soon, Bruce began hearing rumors about the Cylon agent Gina Invierre, who was locked in the Pegasus brig and mistreated by her captors. He hasn't quite forgiven himself for not speaking up in her defense.

When the Pegasus happened upon the Galactica and its civilian fleet, Bruce was overjoyed to hear that his father had survived the slaughter of the Colonies and hoped for a transfer to the Galactica. He had always heard nothing but good things about Commander Adama and hoped that, even though Cain was the higher-ranking officer, that the Admiral would go back to something resembling her old self when she was no longer the only person responsible for the survival of the human race. He was also pleased to discover that his father's friend, Laura Roslin, had survived as well and was now a wartime President.

Before Bruce could apply for a transfer to the Galactica, two of its officers were detained and tried for the murder of Lieutenant Thorne. Upon hearing the circumstances, Bruce decided that he simply couldn't stand by and watch Cain continue her reign of terror. In the dogfight between Galactica and Pegasus, he requested permission to land in the Galactica's hangar bay. He was accepted, but soon found himself at the mercy of a lot angry pilots. One of those pilots was Lieutenant Louann "Kat" Katraine. Bruce was instantly smitten, so much so that the punch in the face she gave him was barely noted.

Bruce instantly reported to Colonel Saul Tigh, who quickly made arrangements for a temporary "reassignment" to a civilian vessel out of the easy reach of Admiral Cain while everything was sorted out. He fully expected court martial and execution, but the death of Admiral Cain changed all that. He was quickly called back to active duty after spending a couple of days with his father and reported first to Galactica for a brief tour of duty, during which he came to know Kat. The two became closer, though Bruce got more attached more quickly than Kat did, and became intimate, which resulted in the conception of their daughter soon before the discovery of New Caprica.

During the brief tenure of Commander Garner, Bruce was transferred back to Pegasus, where he remained until the destruction of that vessel during the rescue mission to New Caprica.

Despite his father's decision to settle on New Caprica, Bruce decided to keep his wings, in large part because Katraine had been promoted to Galactica CAG after the departure of Captain Kara Thrace.

Bruce's first (and to date, only) child was born in the Galactica sickbay several months before the Cylon occupation of New Caprica started. By now, Commander Lee "Apollo" Adama had promoted him again to the rank of captain and he was near the top of the Pegasus foodchain. He spent most of his time during the missing year shuttling back and forth from Pegasus to Galactica, with frequent visits to his father on New Caprica. He came to know and respect Lieutenant Anastasia Dualla, XO of the Pegasus, during that time, a friendship that continues to this day.

Bruce was part of the operation to rescue the survivors of the New Caprica Occupation, having been poached by Admiral Adama because all available pilots were needed. After the destruction of the Pegasus in the successful rescue operation, Captain Grey was reintegrated into the Galactica Viper squadron.

Tragedy struck Bruce and his baby daughter when Kat died, but he was comforted by the fact that she let him marry her on her deathbed and that, ultimately, she trusted him enough to tell him the truth of who she really was before her passing. He renamed his daughter "Sasha" to honor her mother and was determined to care for her himself. He had a hard time, culminating in multiple altercations with Apollo, Starbuck (who he still blames for Kat's death), and Helo. Both Dualla and Cally Tyrol stepped in to help him care for his daughter and he became very close to Cally and her husband in the time immediately following Kat's death.

Bruce was asked to give a eulogy at the memorial service of Kara Thrace, but out of respect for Starbuck's many accomplishments and sacrifices, he declined to do so. He helped Racetrack with her training of the new set of nuggets, who included Samuel T. Anders and former deckhand Diana Seelix. He was also asked to volunteer for the Demetrius mission, but begged off, citing his daughter as a reason to avoid putting himself in more danger than necessary. While disappointed, Admiral Adama was unwilling to take the chance of leaving Sasha Grey an orphan and agreed to leave him off the Demetrius roster.

Leading up to the discovery of a nuked Earth, Bruce was hit hard by the apparent suicide of Crewman Specialist Cally Tyrol, to whom he had become close. He felt that he owed her more than he had repaid with regards to her help with his daughter and blamed many people, including himself, Cally's husband, Admiral Adama, Doc Cottle, and those pilots who treated the deckhands like lower-class citizens, for contributing to her depression. It's possible that he was pushing unresolved issues over the death of his wife onto the situation surrounding Cally's death, because he saw a lot of similarities between the two situations.

Captain Bruce Grey is an OC set within the Battlestar Galactica universe. The writer has nothing to do with BSG or Milo Ventimiglia and this journal is a simple writing exercise.
